Jamie Dornan’s Reluctant Role in Fifty Shades Franchise

Before Jamie Dornan was cast as Christian Grey in Fifty Shades of Grey, the star actor of King Arthur: Legend of the Sword Charlie Hannum was set to star in the movie. But later on due to multiple reasons, he had to drop his role and in turn, turned down the billion-dollar franchise. Charlie Hannum said that he was very uncomfortable filming intimate scenes, though he tries to keep it as much professional as he can to maintain a boundary, intimate scenes are on a different level.

Charlie Hannum revealed that his reason for dropping the role was that he was having difficulty filming for the movie and his then-upcoming tv series Sons of Anarchy. Though this was his declared reason at that time, later on, he revealed that the main reason was that Guillermo del Toro had cast Charlie Hannum in his movie Crimson Peak. 

“Ultimately, no. I mean, I understood the job and the reactions, I was in the running for it for a long time, remember. It wasn’t some split decision I made on a whim. This would have been fun, but it would have been a strange ride. Better not to be on that ride.”

Following Hannum’s exit from the cast, Jamie Dornan was finally cast as Christian Grey and starred in three movies. In an interview with GQ, Dornan shared that initially, he did not want to play in the movie but nevertheless Dornan starred in the movie as it was not a decision he made on a whim. Though he found the role interesting, he wanted to steer clear of the role as Christian Grey.

Jamie Dornan has turned out to be a fan-favorite actor of many and has rightfully earned his name in the Hollywood industry even after the Fifty Shades trilogy. The first movie, Fifty Shades of Grey released in 2015 had a huge success at the box office as it gathered more than $569 million. The overall trilogy amassed more than $1.3 billion with only a mere production cost of $150 million.

Jamie Dornan said to GQ that he will always be grateful for this role in the franchise as it helped him stabilize his livelihood and also helped him financially. Jamie Dornan starred with Anastasia Steele actor Dakota Johnson to make it a billion-dollar franchise. The movie has won many accolades and has been nominated for many more such as the Academy Awards, the Critics Choice Awards, the Golden Globe Awards, the Grammy Awards, and many others.
