Harley Quinn is undoubtedly one of the most fan-favorite characters belonging to DCEU. Margot Robbie’s portrayal of the character in the Suicide Squad franchise and Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey
has instantly gained a wide fandom.
Robbie was charismatic in the role, there’s no doubt about that. David Ayer’s 2016 Suicide Squad was a commercial success but it failed to impress the critics while The Suicide Squad received a decent critical response, it was doomed at the box office.
Margot Robbie’s DCEU Future
After the two films of the Suicide Squad franchise, there have not been any updates on the potential third installment up until now. Recently, appearing on Michael Rosenbaum’s podcast, Inside of You, new DCEU head, James Gunn said that he has no plans for another sequel. When the host asked about it, Gunn vaguely asked, “Is there?” then said, “No.”
Gunn has recently transitioned from MCU to the DC Universe and took over the position of running the studio with Peter Safran. Of course, he has slated a few movies and shows but there is no mention of another Suicide Squad, a potential sequel to Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey, meaning Margot Robbie’s DCEU future is quite vague.
Earlier, Gunn seemed to not favor a new Suicide Squad movie when a fan asked the director about it on Twitter. Gunn said, “I have some other stuff to do first.” It is unclear why Gunn is reluctant to give a green signal to a new movie in the franchise but Gunn has been pretty busy with already announced DC slates. Gunn is also set to direct his new DC movie Superman: Legacy which replaced Henry Cavill as Superman with David Corenswet.
The Harley Quinn Series Rumor
Harley Quinn is charming, so, the circulation of rumors regarding making a standalone series after Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey, dedicating the character is not shocking. Fans also expect Margot Robbie’s return as Quinn.
This year around April, there was a rumor surfaced on social media platforms that a Robbie-led Harley Quinn series is in the making. Many fans accepted the rumor as there were a few unannounced DC Universe projects. The rumor was quite detailed as it even had a title, Harleen following the story of “how her need to save the Joker led to her mind being shattered,” one user wrote on Twitter.
However, when another user tagged Gunn asking if there was any truth to the statement, Gunn bluntly debunked the rumor saying, “There is not.”
However, a few Suicide Squad characters are getting standalone TV shows which include the HBO Max series, Waller which will revolve around Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller, and John Cena starrer Peacemaker is also in the production process.
The Barbie star may reprise the iconic role in the two shows but so far, the complete list of the cast is still under wraps. So, as of yet, there is no news of Robbie’s potential return as Quinn in any DCU projects.
In an alternate DC Universe, singer/actor, Lady Gaga is set to appear as Joker’s love interest Harley Quinn in Todd Phillips’ hit Joker sequel Joker: Folie à deux. The movie is scheduled to hit the theatres on 4 October 2024.
