The death of a major character, especially one from a franchise that has been running for quite a long time, hits the hearts of fans like a truck, and it’s pretty hard to recover. The Marvel Cinematic Universe had one of its major heartbreaks in that regard with Scarlet Witch’s noble sacrifice in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Scarlet Witch’s demise, ultimately for the greater good, left a void in the hearts of fans of Elizabeth Olsen. As if her departure wasn’t enough, Jane Foster’s death in Thor: Love and Thunder was a second arrow to the heart. But if recent rumors regarding the death of Doctor Strange prove true, the pain will just get much more unbearable for MCU fans.
Doctor Strange Might Ultimately Meet His End In Secret Wars
It’s no surprise that Benedict Cumberbatch‘s Doctor Strange has been quite an integral part of the MCU ever since his first appearance in a standalone movie named after the character. He is also considered one the most powerful heroes of the franchise, and being the Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme is no easy job.
The Master of the Mystic Arts might however finally meet his end, which of course would be quite devastating for fans of the MCU. It has been rumored by Twitter user Spider Culture, a popular industry scooper, that Stephen might be looking at a possible departure from the MCU after the events of Avengers: Secret Wars takes place-
Another less-known source added in the reply to the tweet, pointing at the popular Fantastic Four villain Doctor Doom as being the man with blood on his hands-
This would mean, for now, that Benedict Cumberbatch’s character would be the next big star of the MCU to be shown the door.
How Doctor Strange Dies In The Secret Wars Comics
It’s common knowledge that the upcoming Secret Wars will be based on the 2015 comics of the same name, and these reports align very well with what transpires in the comics.
Marvel Comics’ 2015 crossover event called Secret Wars seems to be the working point for Doctor Strange’s death in the comics. The unbridled power of Doctor Doom, whose name goes as God Emperor Doom in the comics, is the culprit.
To explain in short, Doom pretty much had unlimited power in the comics, having stolen the power of the Beyonders. Strange served under the powerful villain for years, with only the discovery of a cosmic life raft containing heroes to change his mind.
In a rush, Strange lets them get away without the knowledge of Doom, much to the disappointment of the latter. The wizard would later be executed by Doom on the spot after refusing to bring back the heroes that he let go.
Now would this be translated into the movie version of Secret Wars? It’s possible, but it’s also important to note that Doctor Doom hasn’t even made his MCU debut yet!
Avengers: Secret Wars is slated for a theatrical release on May 1, 2026.
