James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water has surpassed another blockbuster from the same director. His latest film is now the third highest-grossing movie of all time, overtaking Titanic, as per Variety. Cameron is the only director with three films grossing over $2 billion worldwide.
The sequel to 2009’s original Avatar features Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) as they venture into uncharted waters to protect their loved ones and the planet of Pandora. The movie is also considered the highest-grossing IMAX film in history.
Avatar 2 Is Now The 3rd Highest-Grossing Movie Of All Time
Since Avatar 2 has already been in theaters for weeks, there is less chance it will surpass another milestone. Regardless, Cameron is now basking in his well-deserved glory as securing the third spot in the list of highest-grossing movies of all time is already a historical event. Indeed, the predictions came true, and the franchise delivered its promise.
Cameron appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon back in April 2021 and revealed the pressure he went through directing a huge blockbuster film like Avatar:
“I cry. I just sit here at my desk and cry all day long because there’s no way. It’s just too much pressure, dude.”
Because of this feat, the sequels Avatar 3 and 4 are now rolling into action and are slated for a December 2024 and December 2026 release. Cameron has talked about the plot of the next installment which will feature a new tribe that will pose a threat to our beloved characters. There is also a promise of a futuristic earth that fans will have to watch out for.
Cameron said in his interview with France’s 20 Minutes via Total Film:
“We will also explore new worlds while continuing the story of the main characters. I can say that the last parts will be the best.”
Avatar 2 will indeed earn less than the original at the end of its theatrical run. Although, the future for the franchise looks very promising, and may even join its predecessors in the top-grosser list.

Fans are ecstatic and proud of Avatar 2’s achievement finally landing at the third spot. The hype for the film has been very high especially before its premiere last December. It received mostly positive reviews from critics and fans, and it became one of the biggest movies of 2022.
