DC Studios recently released the first look at Jason Momoa’s return as the DC superhero in the sequel to the 2018 movie, Aquaman 2, which would also be the last film established under Zack Snyder’s DCEU. Following the DCU reboot that took place in Ezra Miller’s The Flash, the sequel is reported to have gone through a series of extensive reshoots. Reports even claimed that the new DC head has “weighed in” on its reshoots.
The director of the upcoming DC film, James Wan, recently responded to such claims, stating that James Gunn may have shared his inputs regarding the reshoots, but the sequel still follows his vision for the Atlantis superhero.
Aquaman 2 Director on James Gunn’s Input in Reshoots
Jason Momoa’s Aquaman 2 is set to hit the theatres in December this year. It will be the last DC film based under the Snyderverse and has been under discussion among fans due to the DCU reboot and its leading star’s future in James Gunn’s DCU.
However, the sequel has recently been surrounded by reports of disastrous post-production, claiming that The Lost Kingdom had to go through three rounds of reshoots. In a report released in July this year, The Hollywood Reporter claimed that the new DC head “weighed in on the most recent cut” of the Aquaman sequel.
Sources also claimed that the reshoot approved by the DC leadership was completed within hours. During his recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, James Wan responded to these claims. Wan shared that he has known James Gunn for a long time and also suggested that Gunn has given some input regarding the reshoots.
However, he also argued that the final cut of the movie would be based on his vision. “We’re horror guys, and so I’m definitely open to ideas. But, at the end of the day, this is my movie,” he said, responding to reports surrounding James Gunn’s involvement in the movie’s reshoots.
Jason Momoa Believes Aquaman Will be Involved in the DCU
DC superhero has gone through several changes since the new co-CEOs announced their plans for a new DC universe, which also resulted in several actors exiting from the franchise. The filmmaker has said that the new DCU will recast some of the characters and will continue with some already existing actors in their respective roles.
However, the situation for Jason Momoa’s Aquaman has been quite complicated, as there have been rumors that the studio has been planning to cast him as the bounty hunter Lobo under the new DCU. Rumors have also suggested that Momoa could continue playing the Atlantis superhero in Gunn’s DC Universe as well, as nothing has been confirmed as of now.
The Justice League star has shared his thoughts on the same during an interview with Total Film, saying, “I absolutely think Aquaman will be involved in the DCU.” He has shared on several occasions that he wishes to continue playing Aquaman, however, he has also suggested that “there might be other characters.”
Aquaman 2 is set to release on December 20, 2023.
