Mark Wahlberg reveals his worst role ever, and it’s not Transformers
Mark Wahlberg has played many roles in his career, in which he has given some hit roles and some badly received ones. He has given some poor performances in movies like Transformers, Mile 22, etc. However, according to the actor, his worst role was in M. Night Shyamalan‘s film The Happening.
In the film, Mark Wahlberg plays the role of a science teacher trying to escape an unexplained number of violent deaths happening across the country. It was the director’s least successful film of all time.
In a discussion about the film a few years after its release, Wahlberg revealed that he didn’t know how to explain the film. The actor shared,
“F**k it. It is what it is. F**king trees, man. The plants. F**k it. You can’t blame me for not wanting to try to play a science teacher. At least I wasn’t playing a cop or a crook.”
After the box office failure of the film, the actor chose not to work with Shyamalan again.
M. Night Shyamalan on Mark Wahlberg criticizing the film
In conversation with Vulture, The Sixth Sense director was asked if he was bothered by Mark Wahlberg’s criticism of his film, The Happening. The director shared that he was not affected and said,
“Since that would be the only case of that happening — no. But really, no. It’s totally his call. However, he wants to interpret it.”
Shyamalan said that The Happening didn’t land well with the audiences because of its tone. He shared that he had hoped the movie would land like a B-movie, but viewers were left unsure if they should take the events of the film seriously or as a comedy.
Shyamalan said,
“I think it’s a consistent kind of farce humor. You know, like ‘The Blob.’ The key to ‘The Blob’ is that it just never takes itself that seriously.”
The Happening was a thriller film, written, directed, and produced by M. Night Shyamalan. It was released in 2008 and featured Mark Wahlberg, Zooey Deschanel, John Leguizamo, and Betty Buckley in prominent roles. The film grossed $163 million worldwide.
