The live-action adaptation of the iconic PlayStation exclusive The Last of Us has been turning out as a massive success among the fans. The show has garnered abundant praise from both critics and fans, as they appreciate the show for being true to its source material.
Although there have been some controversies surrounding the third episode for exploring the romantic relationship between Bill and Frank. But the fans of the game have come in defense of the show against nonsensical hate from homophobic Twitter trolls.
HBO’s The Last of Us improved Bill and Frank’s storyline
The Last of Us has been able to break the infamous video game curse, as fans have been intrigued by every new episode as they can witness their favorite game being brought to life by the dedication and passion of the filmmakers. Despite being a faithful adaptation of the source material, there have been a few changes in the TV show, which include the change in the death of Tess and some changes that were made to suit the medium.
Another prominent change was the take on Bill and Frank’s relationship in the live-action adaptation, which has ameliorated the characters’ story in the live-action in comparison with its predecessor. The TV show has explored the intimate relationship between the two characters in way more depth, while in the games Bill was gay too, but it was too vague and a good portion of the audience may have missed it.
But the TV show takes a more deep dive into their relationship and conveys it in a more hopeful manner. Bill and Frank develop an intimate relationship after Bill falls into one of Frank’s traps. They eventually fall in love with each other. Fans have praised the creators for the wholesome take on the post-apocalyptic relationship and for providing more depth to Bill and Frank’s relationship.
Fans defend The show against homophobic trolls
Although the romantic relationship between Bill and Frank grows organically with the story and has been appreciated by fans for exploring Bill and Frank’s story. But the episode has also garnered some nonsensical hate from the people, who have been resentful over the queer representation.
As the show started to garner toxic hate from the affronted audiences, fans of the game came in defense of the show. They have called out the trolls by explaining that the characters are gay in the game too and one of the protagonists Ellie is also a lesbian in the games, which was explored in the DLC The Last of Us: Left Behind and plays a more prominent factor in The Last of Us Part II.
The Last of Us was one of the few games that brought LGBTQ+ characters into the mainstream through its protagonist Ellie. And her sexuality went on to play a substantial role in her story, which was explored in the DLC The Last of Us: Left behind, which is reportedly being adapted into the HBO show.
