James Gunn’s unique style and touch are one of the core reasons why Guardians of the Galaxy is still considered one of the best MCU projects. The director left no chance and the characters which were unknown to most people became fan favorites in no time. But sadly, some age-old controversial statements led to the temporary firing of Gunn from the third part of the Marvel franchise.
James Gunn was immediately fired by the then Disney Chairman Alan Horn after some of his tweets resurfaced on the internet. These tweets were highly controversial and related to r*pe and p*dophilia. But as the incident created a wide buzz, many GoTG actors as well as other celebrities came to Gunn’s rescue. Even Arnold Schwarzenegger’s ex-wife and Chris Pratt’s mother-in-law Maria Shriver helped Pratt in voicing his support for Gunn.
How did Maria Shriver and Chris Pratt help James Gunn?
It can be understood from his movies that James Gunn has got a very unusual and weird kind of humor. But this backfired when some of his old controversial tweets were circulated on the internet. Even though the Peacemaker creator already apologized for those tweets, the resurfacing of those comments caused an intense backlash. Disney termed the comments as “indefensible and inconsistent” and didn’t intend to keep any connection with Gunn.
Soon after he was fired, many stars from both in and out of the MCU umbrella came to support him. Some stars such as Chris Pratt and Dave Bautista couldn’t accept the fact that they would use James Gunn’s script for the threequel but not hire him. According to the reports by The Hollywood Reporter, Pratt even took help from his present mother-in-law Maria Shriver in writing an open letter to Disney requesting them to take the Super director back for the Marvel threequel.
The Jurassic World actor even sent Bible verses to the director to give him strength in the hard times. The fans also showed full support to the Slither director. On the other hand, other stars such as Dave Bautista also took to their social media accounts to address the issue, and the director was eventually rehired for the project after a long fiasco. But in this long gap, James Gunn also worked for Marvel’s rival company DC in The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker projects.
Presently, James Gunn is also the co-head of DCU along with Peter Safran. It happened after Warner Bros. Discovery thought that of giving a makeover to the DC Universe and set it stably so that it can achieve greater heights like the MCU. Due to this, Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 also marks the last project by the Peacemaker creator under MCU.
Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 looks promising
Soon after we got the teaser and trailer for the third part of GotG, it could be felt that this will be an emotional last ride for our favorite superheroes. Being the concluding Guardians of the Galaxy movie, the team is all set to have some heart-wrenching moments. We might also have to bid farewell to some characters.
As the early reactions to the movie are out, the critics hail the movie as an amazing end to the trilogy. The characters of Rocket Racoon and Adam Warlock are highly praised. It has humor and emotion blended in the right proportion and looks like James Gunn won’t leave any chance to make his farewell from Marvel a special one. Moreover, following the lackluster reception of the recent Marvel projects, this potential banger can once again put MCU to the front.
