Seeing a company like Arkane have such a fantastic run with the Dishonored series and then go on to knock it out of the park with Deathloop we can only speculate on the number of issues that created Redfall and question why it was allowed to be released in the state it was?
Gaming in our current era is probably one of the most accessible forms of media that is readily available for anybody to get into, with our current communication accessibilities to the world and its inhabitants comes judging and also sharing thoughts on creative endeavours simply through word of mouth or a click of a button.
Arkane Could move Onto A New Project In The Form Of A Sequel
Even the strongest of companies can see a dip in quality for some reason or another this isn’t an uncommon issue in our current state of gaming, enter Redfall.
Arkane Studios are known for their games such as Dishonored 1+ 2 and Deathloop, and are no strangers to solid gaming mechanics while surrounding a central theme (assassination and time travel). While Dishonored managed to balance skills and powers associated with the supernatural that have been included in tons of games prior, Arkane really took it to another level and captured the atmosphere of being an assassin in a world filled with powers and gadgets to make the game as varied and fun as possible.
Delivering another unique take on the FPS genre with Prey (2017) using the atmosphere of space inside and outside a ship with zero-G gameplay, classic RPG elements and FPS mechanics alongside a Bioshock-like vibe with alien-controlled humans, and the ability to transform into inanimate objects to use stealth, and we get yet another critically acclaimed title from Arkane Studios.
With Deathloop, Arkane managed to lay the foundations with a very strong title featuring time travel and a story wrapped around multiple dimensions, puzzles and targets all wrapped in a FPS package and this would lead to you having to work around them in order to take out your targets whilst also being hunted yourself.
Going off Arkane’s history of being able to utilise the strengths from the previous games they laid the foundations for their latest project Redfall.
However, Redfall was considered DOA, sloppy game mechanics, poor AI design and huge performance issues across PC and Consoles, this was also a staple point for Xbox regarding their game pass subscription as it was readily available on game pass alongside a strong marketing campaign. The game had all of the right ideas but unfortunately, it wasn’t cooked long enough to be an enjoyable experience. A game featuring vampires, skill trees, 4-player co-op and a lot of mechanics shown in previous titles from the company this should have been Arkane’s take on the highly acclaimed Left 4 Dead series.
Similar games over the past few years have been met with the same fate, Cyberpunk 2077, No Man’s Sky and the remake of XIII were all released unfinished with multiple post-release patches trying to salvage the titles. Upon release these games were to an extent ‘Finished’ and with perseverance, you could make it through the games from start to finish. However, considering the price tags of games nowadays, the reputation of a company and its history are paramount when deciding on how gamers spend their time and if they choose to take the risk. Xbox’s Game pass can certainly soften the blow here but when games are released and trusted sources/individuals and YouTube give information for absolutely nothing really diving deep into the game prior to release it really can be a make-or-break moment.

Now that Redfall has been released and is out there in its current state, the likelihood that it will see a success story after its initial release is highly unlikely. Possibly a handful of DLC announcements and patches to continue the game’s continuation while they work on their next title.
Hopefully given that Arkane has Redfall out there and performing to some degree we will get a new IP or sequel very soon with the company possibly taking a step back and focusing on a new title and doing what they do best, delivering some fantastic FPS titles and making them as unique as possible. Prey 2 or perhaps Dishonored 3, Having already tackled the world of assassination/time travel and space exploration with a solid inclusion of puzzles and free roaming is where Arkane really flourish and with a new announcement potentially on the horizon they can bring themselves back to the limelight after Redfall.
