James Wan has directed some of the most loved movies. From action movies to superhero movies and horror films, he is not afraid to explore different genres. Horror movies are a staple need of media consumers because of just how imaginative things can get. From some of the cult classics to those that may not have been mainstream movies and television series.
Some of the most iconic horror movies come from sections of the paranormal that include aspects of gripping music, gore, and bloom. However, Insidious has a lot of different aspects than what one might go into presuming that it is like any classic scary film. Unlike the rest, it breaks some rules of the paranormal and explores things that many might choose not to. In this process, not only did the franchise become unique, but also loved by fans immensely.
James Wan’s Insidious Profited Massively
When Insidious was first pitched to James Wan, the budget was extremely low to the point where everyone involved in the making of the film had to work with a tight schedule and minimal resources. When comparing big-budget movies to small-budget movies, not only is there a difference in the time allotted but also the resources available to the people.
It can vary from movie to movie as to how they make use of such a budget. Wan knew he had a task in front of him and had to manifest the idea with a small budget. He decided to use sound only when necessary, giving room for more subtle scares with no sense of musical queues to warn the audience of what they are about to face.
The lack of blood and the scary sounds of the paranormal allowed the director to explore areas and make a horror movie unlike any. Even with such a small budget, the movie profited massively and the first movie’s budget was only $1.5 Million. However, it had a total box office run of over $500 Million.
Insidious Was Not Meant To Have Sequels
The ending for the first Insidious is quite common for classic horror movies. Although at the same time, it could be considered to be a great cliffhanger. Josh Lambert, played by Patrick Wilson, killed Lin Shaye’s Elise, the paranormal investigator, following his return to the living world. Just as the credits started to roll, Renai, played by Rose Byrne, realized that her spouse was now imprisoned in the body of an evil ghost.
The ending of the movie left fans asking for more. Although it was an open ending, the directors and producers were only focusing on making the movie right and not aiming to get sequels right off the bat. Despite having such a low budget, the franchise has been extremely profitable to the point where they are making far more than what their budget was aiming for. Now the fifth movie will be coming out and Wilson will be reprising his role once again.
