Not every actor relishes their certain works for numerous reasons, with one being Ryan Reynolds, who doesn’t shy away from mocking his substandard Green Lantern movie. But in Sir Alec Guinness’ case, who is widely loved in the Star Wars fandom for his portrayal of a wise old Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars: A New Hope, it seems that the actor wasn’t quite fond of his time in the movie.
And even though the actor banked a colossal amount from playing Obi-Wan Kenobi and garnered enormous fame, which cemented his legacy in the sci-fi genre, the actor was pretty vocal about his distaste for the genre.
Alec Guinness doesn’t have fond memories from his time in Star Wars: A New Hope
Even though Star Wars: A New Hope is widely regarded as one of the most influential Sci-fi movies, which went on garner a whopping $775.8 million at its release in 1977, Sir Alec Guinness has a quite contrary viewpoint on the movie. The actor complained about the subpar dialogue that he was allotted for the movie and expressed that apart from the paycheck, nothing interested him, and he regretted being attached to the movie. He stated,
“Apart from the money, I regret having embarked on the film. I like them well enough, but it’s not an acting job, the dialogue, which is lamentable, keeps being changed and only slightly improved, and I find myself old and out of touch with the young.”
Considering that the actor was regarded as one of Britain’s best actors at the time and was known for more grounded movies, it’s understandable why the actor wasn’t much of a fan of the sci-fi genre. But despite his distaste for the genre, the Great Expectations actor didn’t shy away from acknowledging the franchise’s accomplishments.
Despite his distaste for the franchise Alec Guinness still acknowledges Star Wars‘ Accomplishments
Apart from picking apart certain aspects of the movie that he didn’t like, Sir Alec Guinness didn’t back away from crediting the franchise for its accomplishments. And before passing away at the age of 86, in an interview, the actor respected what the movie was aiming for and even though it might not be in his preference, he still acknowledged its beauty. He said,
“A marvelous healthy innocence. Great pace, wonderful to look at, full of guts, nothing unpleasant.”
Even though the actor may not have been a fan of the franchise, his depiction of Obi-Wan Kenobi has cemented his legacy among the fans, who haven’t stopped cherishing the actor’s work, even after his death.
