Things did not have a great start for Ant-Man 3 with the film getting review-bombed by critics and following the same path as one of the worst MCU movies. While critics totally lost the faith in the threequel, it received a mixed reaction from fans, as some were satisfied with it, and others were not very happy with the minuscule Avenger. And one of the things fans were not satisfied with was the VFX in the threequel. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania would not be the first Marvel show or film to face criticism over its special effects.
Many phase 4 projects faced criticism over their CGI, and the VFX artists also came out with the claims that the studio had been overworking them. However, despite the massive backlash received due to the lack of better CGI, the studio continues to face the same issue as VFX artists explain the behind-the-scenes issues regarding the Ant-Man threequel.
Marvel Studios Overworking Ant-Man 3 VFX Artists
Fans and critics pointed out VFX issues regarding Ant-Man 3 after its release. And a new report from Vulture puts forward VFX artists’ perspective on the issues with the messed up CGI in the latest Marvel film. The report includes information directly from the VFX artists, and it appears that the studio favored the Black Panther sequel over the Paul Rudd feature in terms of better visual effects.
The VFX artists claimed that the visual effects team for the Ant-Man threequel was smaller than required, and the available artists were overworked with “80 hours per week for months.”
“I think the movie is getting the reviews it’s been getting because Marvel is doubling down as much as possible on constricting quality. They’re squeezing blood out of stones. And we’re out of blood.”
The VFX artists for Ant-Man 3 also claimed that the executives at the studio had the necessary sources and budget for better visual effects, but they avoided using it to hire more VFX artists to lower the burden and evenly distribute the work. “A lot of us are sitting here thinking, ‘The money is there. Why is it not coming down?'” the visual artists explained.
The VFX artists also claimed that the movie had the potential to be so much better than what it turned out to be, as it had some “cool sequences.” However, the shortage of workforce severely affected the quality of the film.
Ant-Man 3 VFX Artists Claim Marvel Favored Black Panther Sequel
Another reason for Ant-Man 3′s poor VFX is also due to the studio allegedly favoring Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in terms of visual effects. A VFX artist who has worked on several Marvel films claimed, “Wakanda Forever took precedence.”
The artist also claimed that the “higher-up and supervisor roles were shifted,” and appointed a smaller team for the threequel, despite the extreme CGI required for the film. They said that they were “creating an actor’s entire action” through CGI when it could have been easily done by a quick shot.
Visual artists also revealed that Wakanda Forever was “definitely at the top of the list.” They shared that “all the money,” and “best resources” went to the Black Panther sequel. “It’s understandable given the context — with Chadwick [Boseman] and everything and how well the first film did,” a VFX artist shared.
The visual effect issues have lasted throughout the last phase of the MCU. With these issues being persistent in the first film of phase 5, it would be hard to assume what to expect from the upcoming films.
