The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) was a completely new approach to the character with new Hollywood stars. The movie starred Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, and Sally Field as Aunt May.
At times, celebrities don’t like it when people associate them with a specific character and that’s exactly what tipped off Sally Field. She once talked about the character explaining that she was not a huge fan of it. The actress has starred in many remarkable films but the modern audience only knows her as Aunt May.
Sally Field regretted this role
Actress Sally Field once appeared on The Howard Stern Show and talked about her most iconic character, Aunt May. The actress said,
“It’s really hard to find a three-dimensional character in it and you work it as much as you can, but you can’t put 10 pounds of s**t in a five-pound bag.”
She explained that the character didn’t have any potential and felt unfinished. She played the character in the first movie and its sequel, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014).
Sally Field explained why she accepted the role
In the same interview, Field was asked if she is a fan of the film. The actress denied and explained why she took up the role,
“It’s not my kind of movie but my friend Laura Ziskin was the producer, and we knew it would be her last film, and she was my first producing partner, and she was a spectacular human.”
Modern audiences associate the actress with the role of May Parker. It was her first time working with Andrew Garfield in a superhero movie and it’s safe to say she will never take up this kind of role again. In the past, she has received two Best Actress Academy Awards and has also starred in countless TV shows.
The Amazing Spider-Man was a reboot
Director Marc Webb’s 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man was a reboot of Sam Raimi’s iconic Spider-Man trilogy. The expectations were obviously high, but it failed to meet them. While it received a mixed response, it successfully introduced a new iteration of the character, laid the foundation for further films in the franchise, and also grossed over $757 million worldwide.
It certainly helped build up the concept of the multiverse in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). Andrew Garfield’s return caused a lot of hype as it created a great sense of nostalgia.
