Zachary Levi is well known for his appearance in the DC movie Shazam! as the lead character. Levi will soon be seen reprising his character of Bill Batson aka Captain Marvel in the upcoming Shazam! Fury of the Gods. The Chuck star appeared in Joe Rogan’s popular podcast and opened up about his struggles with mental health and how the American Underdog star went through a phase of anxiety, depression, and self-loathing. Levi talked about his difficult mental health journey.
Zachary Levi Hated Himself
Shazam! Star opened up about the stages of life where he was constantly hit by anxiety. Levi also added that he just felt listless and depressed if he was not working or keeping himself occupied. As he stated that he had “massive dopamine crashes”. The Chuck star further added that he constantly struggled with self-hatred and his increasing feeling of worthlessness.
“I didn’t know what I was constantly feeling all the time, well anxiety I was constantly feeling all the time. Depression would hit me in these moments where…basically, I had massive dopamine crashes, as I think I have come to find out. I would finish a job, you know get out of a relationship, wouldn’t be working for a while, and all of a sudden it’s like I’m worthless, I’m worthless, I’m worthless…”
Zachary Levi shared that when he moved out of Austin at 37 and had a whole breakdown. The actor continued that his work constantly helped him maintain his dopamine level. The actor admitted that he heavily relied on “boozing, drugging and se*ing” to constantly maintain his hormone level, but admitted that any of the activities were not any aid to his situation.

Zachary Levi Confessed About Severe Suicidal Thought
While sharing his years of mental and emotional burden. The Shazam! star who went through rigorous therapies to pull himself out of the dark shared that he was left all alone once he moved to Texas without any support. Levi added that he thought of killing himself more than once,
“I came out had nobody, had no real support structure, work wasn’t great, love life wasn’t great, all these things were just falling down on me and so massive just..spiral into darkness. Yeah! It was gnarly. I mean I definitely considered of killing myself and it wasn’t the first time I ideated on certain thoughts like that. If ultimately committing suicide is like a ten-rung ladder, I was at rung nine a couple of times. It was gnarly. But I didn’t realize that the reason why you get there is because your hormones are all completely out of whack.”
The Chuck star shared a strong message on self-love. The actor emphasized the very fact that it’s important to love yourself to live happily, The world won’t care about you if you don’t care about yourself.
“I will also mention that it gave a lot of understanding to my psychology and psychology in general, I suppose. But I learning all these things about how to like love yourself more, and that’s great. You can learn all that knowledge but if you still don’t believe that you are worthy of being loved, you won’t apply any of it, you don’t care about any of it. Don’t see the value in yourself to want to put that work in, you know.”
Levi’s story shared his journey while fighting self-loathing, anxiety, and depression. Many out there who are struggling with these or any sort of mental health issues will surely get encouraged to make their first contribution towards themselves. The actor will soon be seen reprising his role as a DC superhero in the upcoming movie, Shazam! Fury of the Gods will be released on March 17, 2023.
