Hollywood star Anne Hathaway has come a long way as an actress. After making her big screen debut with the 2001 Disney film The Princess Diaries, she has established herself among some of the most versatile actresses in the industry by starring in romantic dramas to sci-fi films. The actress also had the opportunity to portray the DC character Catwoman in Christopher Nolan’s 2012 film The Dark Knight Rises.
And Hathaway seemed to have taken the opportunity so seriously that she rejected the offer for an Oscar-winning role and the opportunity to star alongside Tom Cruise in his 2012 musical comedy Rock of Ages.
Anne Hathaway Refused to Star Alongside Tom Cruise
Adam Shankman’s 2012 musical drama Rock of Ages follows Sherrie and Drew who decide to help each other to achieve their dream to become famous musicians. It featured an ensemble cast, including stars like Russell Brand, Alec Baldwin, Tom Cruise, and many others.
Anne Hathaway was also offered the role of Constance Sack in the film. However, the Passengers actress was busy with Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, in which she starred as Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman, alongside Christian Bale.
Her busy schedule caused her to turn down the offer. The same part was also offered to Amy Adams. However, she was also busy filming the 2013 DC film Man of Steel with Henry Cavill and ended up rejecting the offer. The part of Constance Sack eventually went to Malin Akerman.
Rock of Ages, however, was unable to make it big at the box office. The film was a box office bomb as it barely made $60 million. Critics were also not a fan of the film. However, Cruise still managed to outshine everyone else with his performances of the 80s hit songs.
Anne Hathaway Rejected Oscar-Winning Role For DC Film
While Rock of Ages was not as big as The Dark Knight Rises, Anne Hathaway also rejected the offer to star in an Oscar-nominated film for the 2012 DC film. Before Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper landed the lead role in the romantic drama, The Intern actress was in talks to star alongside Mark Wahlberg in David O. Russell’s 2012 film Silver Linings Playbook.
However, she turned down the offer. The reason for dropping out of the film varies. While some claimed that the film had a scheduling conflict with The Dark Knight Rises, Harvey Weinstein shared that Hathaway left the movie due to some creative differences with the film’s director, David O. Russell.
“David and Anne had some creative differences. They didn’t see eye-to-eye,” he said during an interview. Weinstein shared that he wanted her to star in the film, but she “wasn’t doing it.” Although she lost the opportunity in the 2012 film, the actress won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her 2013 film Les Misérables.
Rock of Ages is available on Prime Video.
