It looks like James Gunn’s DCU can finally taste the fruit of success after a long time. The condition of the universe was not looking good after a series of disappointing results. As the news of Gal Gadot and Wonder Woman 3 hit the internet, the fans were surprised to hear about the return of one of the biggest DC stars.
One of the earliest feats of James Gunn and Peter Safran after being the co-heads of DCU involved the scrapping of the Wonder Woman 3 script written by Patty Jenkins. On top of that, the decisions taken with the other DCEU stars also presented a sense of doubt over Gal Gadot’s fate until this announcement was made.
Is James Gunn all set to bring back Gal Gadot in DCU?
Soon after the whole High Table of DC was changed and we saw the dawn of the new DCU, it was clear that things wouldn’t be the same anymore. James Gunn announced a soft reboot that would see the departure of many of the fan favorites. While Henry Cavill’s Superman and Ben Affleck’s Batman were some of the earliest victims of it, Gal Gadot‘s Wonder Woman’s future was uncertain except for her cameos in Shazam! 2 and The Flash.
As the Israeli heartthrob was busy promoting her upcoming action flick Heart of Stone, it was revealed that she is developing a Wonder Woman 3 along with James Gunn and Peter Safran. Gal Gadot broke the news during an interview with ComicBook before SAG-AFTRA’s strike where she said:
“I love portraying Wonder Woman. It’s so close to and dear to my heart. From what I heard from James [Gunn] and from Peter [Safran] is that we’re gonna develop a Wonder Woman 3 together.”
Gal Gadot was introduced as Diana Prince aka Wonder Woman in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice before landing the lead role in 2017’s Wonder Woman. The 2017 Patty Jenkins directorial turned out to be one of the most successful projects both critically and commercially. A sequel titled Wonder Woman 1984 was also released but it failed to live up to the name of its predecessor and ended up being subjected to massive backlash.
Even though James Gunn already stated that the soft reboot won’t replace every single DCEU character except the ones needed, the future of Gal Gadot was highly debatable. But now with the reports of her return almost confirmed to this new universe, DC can look forward to a better future.
How will Wonder Woman 3 impact the future of DCU?
When James Gunn announced some projects for the first chapter of DCU titled “Gods and Monsters”, there was nothing related to Wonder Woman except a Max series titled Paradise Lost. However, the Game of Thrones-esque series is set to be a prequel to the story of Diana Prince.
With the announcement of the Wonder Woman threequel, fans can expect an improvement in the Box Office figures after the last set of projects were all massive disappointments. Although Wonder Woman 1984’s reception can stand as a potential obstacle, it will be interesting to watch how the third part fits the future of this new DCU.
The new DCU is going to be kickstarted by Superman: Legacy directed by James Gunn which will star David Corenswet as the titular character. Speaking on the new screen tests, the 38-year-old said that she is extremely happy about the new cast and hopes their new venture to be a joyful ride.
Superman: Legacy is slated to be released on July 11, 2025.
