Reports suggest that a TV series based on Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky is in the works. It could be similar to Young Rock, a TV series created by Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, which explores the actor’s early life. Stallone, who was a relatively unknown actor when he portrayed the lead character, a small-time boxer from Philadelphia in the 1976 film Rocky, also wrote the screenplay.
The Rocky franchise has continued with the Creed spinoff films, in which Stallone reprised his role in the first two installments and served as a producer for Creed III. Stallone went on to star in and write all five Rocky sequels, directing some of them. According to Deadline, Amazon Studios plans to expand the Rocky franchise with a TV show from Stallone.
When Can Fans Expect Rocky TV Series
Stallone and his production company, Balboa Productions, recently inked a first-look deal with the studio for film and TV projects. Sources suggest that developing a Rocky TV series may be part of the agreement. However, the process may need more time due to ongoing legal disputes surrounding the Rocky movie rights and the conflict between Sylvester Stallone and producer Irwin Winkler.
Following Amazon Studios’ acquisition of MGM’s extensive intellectual property library in March 2022, plans for a Creed universe expansion were already underway, with franchise star Michael B. Jordan taking charge as the director. It included a potential spinoff focused on Amara, the deaf daughter of Adonis and Bianca, played by Mila Davis-Kent in Creed III.
Additionally, an anime series inspired by Japanese animation and featuring Creed III‘s fight scenes were also announced. While a Drago spinoff film penned by Robert Lawton was previously confirmed to be in the works, its future lies in the limbo of uncertainty.
What Plots Will Rocky TV Series Explore
The potential Rocky TV series from Stallone is the latest addition to Amazon’s growing list of projects. While no official details have been released, it’s believed that the show would delve into the early days of Rocky’s career as a boxer. The series will include his initial club fights and his stint as a debt collector for the Philadelphia mafia.
As a prequel series, it may also delve into Rocky’s personal life and background before he became a boxing legend, providing more insight into his character and motivations. As part of his first-look deal with the studio, Stallone is also expected to produce the series, and also take on a writing role.
In a 2022 interview with THR, Stallone was also asked about the much-speculated prequel series to Rambo. Stalone believes that the series will eventually come to fruition, but it may not take the form he originally envisioned. Rather than a Ken Burns-style prequel showcasing a younger Rambo, Stallone hinted that the series could feature an older Rambo passing on the mantle to a new generation of characters.
Rocky starring Sylvester Stallone, is available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video and Netflix.
