After Dwayne Johnson, Henry Cavill, and Ben Affleck, Shazam 2 Director Abandons James Gunn’s DCU: “I’m definitely done with superheroes”

After Dwayne Johnson, Henry Cavill, and Ben Affleck, Shazam 2 Director Abandons James Gunn's DCU: "I’m definitely done with superheroes"

Shazam 2 has finally been released after a long wait and the response hasn’t been the best. Zachary Levi’s future in the franchise is not looking the kindest. There may even be a chance, much bigger than before, that the actor will not be reprising his role as the lead in the movie throughout the DC Universe. The upcoming slate already has no place for the character, and with this response, it would seem that future slates might not either.

David F. Sandberg already has plans post the movie. He is not much taken aback by the response. Instead, he is taking it as an opportunity to move on and focus on other projects and genres outside of the superhero industry.

David F. Sandberg Will No Longer Do Superhero Movies After Shazam 2

In his latest thread of tweets, David F. Sandberg, the director of both the Shazam movies confirmed that he will not be coming back to the franchise nor superhero movies in general. Whether this is a break or a permanent step back from the genre is still unclear.

“As I’ve been saying for a while now I’m very eager to go back to horror (as well as trying some new things). After six years of Shazam I’m definitely done with superheroes for now.”

With the response the movie got, Sandberg wants to return to making horror movies instead of investing his time in making another superhero movie. After Dwayne Johnson, Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, and even Gal Gadot, now another celebrity has chosen to step away from the DCU. It would seem as if for James Gunn’s franchise, people are going away from it rather than towards it. The director has made it very clear that his upcoming projects will be horror movies and he would not be touching the superhero genre for a long time.

David F. Sandberg Does Not Regret Making Shazam 2

Sandberg further added that he would be extremely relieved to escape the discourse that superhero fans cause online. Fans are known to not spare anyone and would always go to the extreme either positively or negatively. So that is one aspect that David F. Sandberg is looking forward to moving away from.

“Just to be clear, I don’t regret even for a second making the Shazam movies. I’ve learned so much and gotten to work with some truly amazing people. Will forever be grateful that I got to direct two of these! They’ve been very challenging but valuable experiences.”

He confirmed that one thing in all this was that he did not regret making the two movies. Working with Zachary Levi was great for him and that is not something he dwells on.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is now available to watch in theatres.
