2023 has a jam-packed summer season where mega tentpole IP films like Across the Spider-Verse, Barbie, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, and more will compete for box office supremacy. But Chris Pratt’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie came before the summer rush and conquered the box office.
It broke the videogame adaptation curse and proved its naysayers wrong. Drenched in nostalgia and an updated plot, the film took home a mega $1.3 billion on a $100 million budget. Its success was insane and unprecedented. So naturally, fans want to know when a sequel is coming. Chris Pratt has hinted at it too, but there’s a catch.
Chris Pratt Thanked Fans For Supporting The Super Mario Bros. Movie
In an interview with ET Online, Chris Pratt revealed that he was grateful for the fan support towards The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The actor revealed that he thought the film was going to be loved by audiences, but he never expected it to gross $1.3 billion globally. The Marvel star said:
“We’re so grateful for the support, though. [It’s] really shocking to me how successful that movie’s been. I mean, I expected that people would love it the way I was excited about it, but it’s truly multi-generational around the world. People love it. They love Mario… It’s a really fun, funny, cute, heartwarming movie and, God, I can’t believe I’m part of it.”
Apart from The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Pratt has also been part of another successful film this year- Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. While the Marvel film was the end of a trilogy, the Mario film is probably the beginning of one. As such, fans are asking Pratt to confirm the news of a sequel. The actor thinks everyone needs to take a break.
Chris Pratt Revealed Plans For The Super Mario Bros. Movie Sequel
During the ET Online interview, Chris Pratt answered the question, everyone wanted to know- is a sequel to his and Anya Taylor-Joy’s Super Mario Bros. film coming? The answer is a bit tricky because of the WGA Strike. The actor said:
“We’re in the midst of this writers’ strike, and so everything has been paused and [put] on hold for the right reasons. I really do support the WGA and our writers. When the negotiations have been completed, and the writers feel comfortable moving forward, then it’ll be time to start talking about what’s next for that.”
So it looks like no conversations have been had about a sequel because of the WGA strike. Several fans of the franchise are speculating that a sequel is almost guaranteed at this point due to the gargantuan box office collection of the film. However, whether that happens or not remains to be seen.
