The climactic opening tune in every James Bond movie is not only a catchy musical score but also sets the tone for the entire plot. It helps contributes to the franchise’s legacy and also creates a long-lasting impact on the viewers. All theme songs are such an integral element of the film that often the lead star is the one who has the most say in choosing them.

For the 2012 James Bond film, Skyfall, the amazing singer Adele was approached. Although initially apprehensive about making a ‘Bond’ song, the star’s powerful theme song Skyfall touched millions of hearts and won an Oscar. The Oscar-winning song was so powerful that it even made the lead, Daniel Craig emotional.

In an interview, Craig revealed his first reaction to the song,

“I cried. From the opening bars I knew immediately, then the voice kicked in and it was exactly what I’d wanted from the beginning. It just got better and better because it fitted the movie. In fact, the more of the movie we made, the more we fitted it.”

And it was for this exact reason that he wanted Adele to come back for a second time.

Daniel Craig was awestruck when he heard Adele’s James Bond theme song. It was a love-at-first-sight sort of thing that resulted in an Oscar win for Best Original Sound. Despite their successful collaboration, Adele refused to come back for the second time when Craig wanted her for the film Spectre. A source revealed,

“Adele was James Bond himself’s first choice. Daniel Craig was really keen and (director) Sam Mendes was 50/50 over whether to use her or a fresh voice.”

The Easy on Me singer was reportedly offered a lumpsum amount of $5 million, but she turned it down as she wasn’t sure she would be able to re-create her previous magic.

“How do you top a worldwide hit like Skyfall any way? It was too big a risk.”

Despite being the leading star’s first choice, Adele chose to let go of the opportunity and broke Daniel Craig’s heart.

Skyfall and Spectre are available to stream on Amazon Prime.
