If any lingering uncertainty remained, The Last of Us undeniably demonstrated that even the most hardcore genre premise – in this instance, a zombie narrative adapted from a video game – has the potential to evolve into a premier prestige TV drama when entrusted to immensely skilled creators. In this case, the responsibility fell upon showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann.
Their narrative, which follows a rugged survivor (Pedro Pascal) navigating a pandemic-ravaged America while safeguarding a teenager (Bella Ramsey), successfully garnered a remarkable 24 Emmy nominations (second only to Succession). Beyond its critical acclaim, the series enjoyed considerable streaming success, amassing an average of over 30 million viewers per episode.
Will The Last Of Us Season 2 Have Abby?
As Season Two makes its debut, audiences can anticipate it continuing the narrative of The Last of Us Part II. This installment of the game saw the reentry of Joel and Ellie, although a substantial portion revolved around the introduction of newcomer Abby. Her storyline holds pivotal significance in The Last of Us Part II, and it appears that HBO might have already identified a potential candidate to assume the role.
In a recent discussion with The Hollywood Reporter, Craig Mazin was queried about the portrayal of Abby, and the showrunner promptly acknowledged that potential casting decisions might have encountered delays due to the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strike.
“The strike stopped us in our tracks. Things were in process. Look, Abby was the first role that we wanted to tackle. We’ve got a pretty good track record of making major cast announcements and people going, “Really?” which will probably continue,” Mazin told THR. “So people may disagree, but I think we got it right so far and the audience seems to feel we got it right and the Academy seems to feel we got it right.”
During the same interview, Mazin reiterated the notion that the narrative from The Last of Us Part II will span over several seasons. However, he exercised caution and refrained from delving into specifics regarding the exact number of seasons required to unfold the story.
