Matt Healy was brutally criticized over the weekend by none other than one of his fellow labelmates, Rina Sawayama. Highlighting his scandalous podcast, the singer put him on blast at the Glastonbury show. Without mentioning Healy’s name while performing her set on Saturday, Sawayama dedicated her song STUF! to the English singer.
Enduring enough, Rina Sawayama criticized Matt Healy over his controversial podcast appearance, where he joined in to mock rapper Ice Spice. Following her performance, the singer sparked a ripple of applause and wild cheers from the crowd as she spoke up against racism.
Rina Sawayama Blasted Matt Healy At Glastonbury Show
Over the weekend, during her performance at the Glastonbury music festival, Rina Sawayama took a dig at The 1975 frontman, Matt Healy. Making it abundantly clear that she doesn’t hold the English singer in high regard, Sawayama prepared to sing one of her songs in dedication to Healy.
While Rina Sawayama didn’t name Healy directly, she made a clear reference to him as she prepared her track STFU! Speaking about her song while making clear reference to Healy’s involvement in a controversial podcast, Sawayama spoke out against racism. The 32-year-old singer subtly criticized The 1975 frontman over his mockery of rapper Ice Spice and inclination to racially charged p*rnography.
Introducing the song STFU!, Rina Sawayama stated, “I wrote this next song because I was sick and tired of microaggressions.” Further making a clear indication of Matt Healy, Sawayama stated,
“So, tonight, this song goes out to a white man who watches [p*rnography series] Ghetto Gaggers and mocks Asian people on a podcast.”
Sparking a ripple of applause from her audience, Sawayama hit out Healy with her song at the Glastonbury show.
Matt Healy Made Racist Remarks In A Controversial Podcast
Earlier this year, the English singer Matt Healy sparked backlash following his appearance in The Adam Friedland Show podcast. The 34-year-old laughed along as Asian accents were mocked, and even made a few remarks himself. Further cracking jokes about watching racially charged p*rn, Healy offended his listeners with his humor and earned the tag of a misogynist.
On the podcast, Matt Healy joined Adam Friedland and others and mocked rapper Ice Spice. He then poked fun at her wrongly identified accent and heritage as Chinese, Hawaiian, and Inuit. Further taking a dig at his watch history of racially charged p*rnography series, Healy mentioned scenes that “brutalized” women.
The backlash surrounding Matt Healy’s podcast rumbled on for weeks and even caused fans to jeopardize his short-lived romance with Taylor Swift. Further, Healy’s comments were condemned by ESEA Music, alleging how the singer advanced “flagrant racism and complicity in laughing along at harmful Asian tropes”. Although Healy successfully dodged all comments and almost closed the case, Rina Sawayama’s performance has once again sparked controversy and made headlines.
