When Superman: Legacy, the inaugural film of James Gunn’s new DC Universe, hits theaters in the coming years, it won’t be just the Man of Steel gracing the screen. Confirming fresh news, Gunn revealed that at least three other iconic DC superheroes will make appearances in the movie.
Isabela Merced will bring Hawgirl to life, Edi Gathegi will portray Mr. Terrific, and Nathan Fillion, known for his frequent collaborations with James Gunn, will take on the role of the DCU’s very first Green Lantern. However, fans are unhappy as the news hints that a Green Lantern series featuring Finn Wittrock will be canceled.
Is James Gunn Promoting Nepotism At DCU
Guy Gardner isn’t the first DC character that Nathan Fillion will be taking up. The actor previously showcased his talent in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad as The Detachable Kid (TDK). His character was capable of detaching his arms and controlling them remotely. Nathan Fillion has also worked with James Gunn in movies, including Slither, Super, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
In contrast to Ryan Reynolds’ portrayal of Hal Jordan in the ill-fated Green Lantern film, Nathan Fillion’s character, Guy Gardner, represents a distinct Green Lantern. Within DC Comics, the Green Lanterns are often depicted as a cosmic law enforcement agency comprising numerous heroes who harness the power of their individual green rings. When Hal Jordan faced a setback and relinquished his role as Green Lantern, Guy Gardner stepped in as his temporary replacement.
“Among the rest of the aliens and humans who serve in that group of galactic peacekeepers, Gardner is known as an abrasive, sometimes obnoxious presence. The role also brings a dose of awkward comedy to Superman Legacy. The character is known for his iconic bowl cut haircut, which will be a part of Fillion’s look in the film,” according to Vanity Fair.
Will This Be Guy Gardner’s Debut In The DCEU
While Guy Gardner has yet to make an appearance in a film, there were plans for him to star in his own TV series. DC had been in the process of developing a Green Lantern show specifically centered around Gardner, with Finn Wittrock in talks for the role. However, the project failed to materialize, leading DC to shift its focus towards a comprehensive relaunch of its universe under the guidance of James Gunn.
Throughout his history, Gardner has found himself as a recurring figure within the Justice League of America, the Justice League International, the Darkstars, and the Red Lantern Corps.
Gardner’s persona is a fascinating blend of complexity and contradiction. As a hero, he demonstrates a propensity for bending the rules and pushing boundaries, occasionally treading the line between heroism and villainy.
