Spider-Man is one of the most iconic and loved characters of all time. However, it is not common to hear his name with that of Tom Cruise. Spider-Man became a favorite for almost anyone who was growing up being acquainted with superheroes. One of the most popular heroes of all time, Peter Parker has often been turned into a movie. His story is one everyone wanted to see turned into a live-action film.
Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse is a movie loved by everyone. The amount of effort put into the animation, storytelling, voice acting and so much more has always been heavily appreciated. However, there was almost a moment when another actor showed up in the movie. Tom Cruise was ready to wear the mask for a movie within the film.
Tom Cruise Was Almost In Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse
Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse features a sequence where Miles Morales is teaching himself how to become Spider-Man by reading a comic book. The comic book features ways as to how he could work his way through web-slinging.
“There was a movie version of a movie about Spider-Man in Miles’ universe about the real person Spider-Man, but it was a James Cameron-directed movie with Tom Cruise as Spidey. Yes. Spidey. And it was James Cameron and Spidey and Tom Cruise on the audio.”
There was an alternate version of the film where instead of a comic book, Miles would refer to a movie about Spider-Man. This movie would be directed by James Cameron and would have his voice-over alongside Tom Cruise as Spidey, not Spider-Man. This would have also featured the real Spider-Man as a guest star. It would have completely been an audio documentary which Miles would depend on. Spider-Man was said to be the technical advisor of the movie.
Why Was The Sequence With Tom Cruise Deleted?
The sequence was a direct reference to a James Cameron movie that was almost made during the 80s. Not many fans would have understood the scene but hardcore fans would have jumped in excitement. During the 80s, Cameron was working on a Spider-Man movie much before Sam Raimi’s idea came to life.
“The fact that it’s taken us almost three minutes to explain this idea to you, it gives you an idea of why it didn’t make it in.”
Although Leonardo DiCaprio was thought to be playing Peter Parker, Tom Cruise’s name had been floating around for quite some time. Cannon Films had been developing the project and Arnold Schwarzenegger was set to play Doc Ock. The scene had to be removed because of just how difficult it was for the general audience to understand.
