While in an interview with the New York Times, AND director, Yorgos Lanthimos shared that while filming for the movie, out of all the actors Willem Dafoe was most committed to his role in the movie. There even arose a scenario where Emma Stone, who plays the role of Dafoe’s daughter in the movie had to slap him over 20 times off-screen just because the Green Goblin had to make the scene look real on-screen. Emma Stone on Willem Dafoe’s Generosity

Emma Stone was shocked by Willem Dafoe’s involvement with his co-stars in the movie as he frequently appeared on set even when he was not called for the day. In the interview, the director and the actors relayed that Dafoe prioritized the movie over everything else, thus letting Stone slap him multiple times. Emma Stone further shared,

“There’s this instinct to perform that many actors have — the ‘look at me, look at me!’ kind of performer, He’s the opposite of that. Maybe it’s changed through the years, a lot of actors I bond with have been doing this for a long time, and you know they’ve gone from ‘I’ to ‘We'”

Even the director agreed with what the La La Land actor had to say and appreciated Dafoe’s enthusiasm for the movie by saying, “That’s what you want from actors, to want to be part of it in any way”.
