Tom Hardy is an extraordinarily talented and well-recognized actor. He has made a name for himself as one of the industry’s most versatile and skilled actors, starring in massively successful projects like Legend, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Dark Knight Rises, and Dunkirk. Despite his work on these projects, however, his work on Sony’s Spider-Man Universe’s Venom, stands out more than others, showcasing a beloved character from the comics in the most refreshing yet accurate way possible.
What would be rather peculiar is if before Hardy managed to grab his role as Eddie Brock in 2018, he ended up playing a completely different character in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad.
Tom Hardy Was Supposed To Be Part Of Suicide Squad
Tom Hardy has almost played many comic book characters in the past, being in the running for iconic characters like Doctor Strange, and Apocolypse, Sandman. Another name that can be added to this list is the role of Rick Flag, the military general from the 2016 film, Suicide Squad, starring Margot Robbie and Will Smith. Though Hardy had officially signed onto the project, things started to get complicated due to a previous project.
Hardy was working on The Revenant, alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, when he signed on the DC film. This seemed to be a bad decision, however, as the shooting schedule for the DiCaprio film ended up running longer than expected. Over time, working on two projects at the same time posed quite a challenge for the actor and he eventually had to let go of the David Ayer film.
Did Tom Hardy Dodge A Bullet?
It would seem that Tom Hardy may have made the right decision to not be part of David Ayer’s Suicide Squad as although the film did well at the box office, fans very extremely disappointed with it. The film was called underwhelming by its audiences, who believed that too much of the spotlight was focused on specific character subplots rather than the actual storyline of the film.
On top of this, Hardy’s decision to focus his attention on The Revenant rather than the DC film paid off exceptionally well, as the film earned the actor his first and only to this date, Oscar nomination. Even though there were many A-list actors involved in the project, the film helped boost their careers even further, making the audiences see these actors in a light they had never before.
