The Henry Cavill-led and Zack Snyder-directed Man of Steel has its takers and detractors. The film has been criticized for its depiction of Superman as well as the plot used. The scene where Clark Kent’s father dies in a tornado because he doesn’t let his son save him has been memed to death. However, the movie has been praised too. Man of Steel has been lauded for its cinematography, music, and aerial fight scenes.

Another thing that the project has been praised for is completely reinventing Superman visually. The suit, weapons, and Krypton, look alien-like. Apart from the aesthetics, star Henry Cavill was lauded for putting in the effort to bulk up and give Superman the god-like physique he deserved. However, in doing so, he ripped apart his suit.

“There was a suit that I had fitted all the way through the movie, and then I wore the suit at the end of the movie, and it split seams at the trousers.”

The interviewer joked that he had basically hulked out. Even the costume designer of the film, Michael Wilkinson, had once called Cavill a human specimen because of his chiseled body. In an interview, he called The Witcher star a dream actor to work with because of his patience. The designer said:

“Henry has to be the most patient, calm, and professional man on the planet. He never complained, even after fittings that lasted four and a half hours, or working in 100-degree heat in the cornfields of Illinois.”

However, wearing a skin-tight suit comes with its own set of problems, like having to always be on bladder control duty.

During an interview with the New York Post, Henry Cavill talked about the perils of wearing a skin-tight superhero costume. He explained that it becomes difficult to go to the bathroom. So during shooting, he had to control his water intake. The Mission Impossible star said:

“It’s quite a tight suit. Going to the lavatory wasn’t the easiest thing. It would take some time to get in and out, (so) I’d have to wait. (While filming) in Chicago, I could drink as much as I wanted because I’d sweat and it would be fine. But (in) Vancouver (British Columbia), where it was cold I got one bottle of water every half-day — brutal.”

The actor has always proclaimed his love for Superman, but sadly, the suit or the cape isn’t his anymore. James Gunn is all set to reboot the DCU with Superman: Legacy, and allegedly, he has begun screen-testing actors for the role as well. It now remains to be seen who bags the coveted role of the Last Son of Krypton.

Man of Steel is streaming on HBO Max, and Superman: Legacy will be released on July 11, 2025.
