The movement that started in 2013 gained international attention and support after the 46-year-old black man George Floyd died in police custody. Hollywood celebrities, along with Mark Wahlberg, also supported the movement on social media. However, the move backfired on the Uncharted star. Soon after he shared his support for George Floyd and the black community, he was deemed a hypocrite by netizens who dug out his history of offenses against people of color.
Mark Wahlberg Has a History of Racists Hate Crimes
During the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020, similar to many celebrities, Mark Wahlberg also shared his support for the movement in an Instagram post. He shared a picture of George Floyd, whose death in police custody led to nationwide outrage, and urged everyone to work together to get rid of discrimination in the system and society. He mentioned in his post,
“The murder of George Floyd is heartbreaking. We must all work together to fix this problem. I’m praying for all of us. God bless.”
However, people were not very pleased with the Ted star’s post and called him a hypocrite as they listed the hate crimes he did as a teenager. During the 1980s, Wahlberg was charged two times for racial hate crimes and has even served in jail for one of the offenses.
There are also claims that the 15-year-old Wahlberg chased three black children and threw rocks at them, saying, “Kill the n*****s.” He then went on to gather white men to harass and throw rocks at a group of children at a beach in 1986.
Mark Wahlberg Intoxicatedly Attacked Vietnamese Men
Mark Wahlberg was also accused of harassing two Vietnamese men while he was intoxicated. The Boogie Nights star reportedly attacked one of the men with a wooden stick and punched another in the eye. Authorities claimed that the actor used racial slurs to describe the two men and called them “Vietnam f*cking sh*t.”
He was charged with attempted murder for these attacks. But Wahlberg decided to plead guilty to felony assault and claimed that he was intoxicated at the time. He ended up getting a two-year prison sentence considering his history of racial hate crimes. But the Transformers actor only served 45 days in prison.
Mark Wahlberg Seeked Redemption For His Crimes
In 2014, Mark Wahlberg attempted to seek pardon for attacking Vietnamese men and appealed to get it removed from his criminal record. He apologized for his actions in April 1988 in his pardon application. He said, “I am deeply sorry for the actions that I took on the night of April 8, 1988, as well as for any lasting damage that I may have caused the victims.”
He claimed that he has since tried his best to become a better person and a better citizen so that he can be a role model for his children and the people around him. However, he dropped his request two years later, in 2016. He has said that he is glad that he is “not a part of the gang anymore” and decided to do the right thing by turning his life around.
